Tech Tips
Batteries 101
One of the most important things that you can do is make sure you have good quality batteries in good condition. There are as many brands and types of batteries in the world as there are RV's some good some bad, And since it is posably the most important piece of equipment you can have in your coach as far as operationly so don't skimp. The 12v system controls virtually everything, your slide outs , refers , water heaters , your lights, etc. So Make sure each time that you intend to use your RV your batteries are fully charged , Not just what the monitor panel says, put a slow charge on your batteries until full, this process usualy takes a few days. Make sure your cables are in good repair free of corrosion and all the stranded wire is intact and in good condition. Make sure your cleaning your battery terminals and keeping them clean. Ensure you have good clean tight connections. An make sure you are checking the condition of you batteries often. The average 12 volt rv/marine battery only lasts about 2 years before it starts to deteriorate rapidly. Rv batteries are designed with thick plates that displace energy slowly but last over a long period of time vs. auto batteries that are designed with thin plates and disperse energy quickly. The trouble with that is it takes a fair amount of time to recharge deep cycle batteries and poor quality of materials means poor quality of batteries. So sometimes cheaper isn't always better. Lastly understand what kind of demand your putting on your battery. Deep cycle batteries are measured in amp hours such as 90ah - this means this battery will last for 90ah at a certian voltage drain. So if you can imagine your overhead light bar will draw 1.5amps for every hour its in use on the other side of that is the furnace which is about 13amps. its simple to calculate your battery usage out. And keep in mind that your battery system or bank is only as strong as your weakest battery. Meaning that if you have one new battery and one old battery the bank will only be as strong as the old battery. Take care of your batteries and they will take care of you - Have fun and happy camping !!!
